If a password has to be handed over, keep its text out of an ordinary chat or email archive.

Make the handoff intentional

Confirm who needs the password and send a one-time link through a channel you trust. The recipient opens the link, then chooses when to reveal the message. The password is encrypted in your browser before the server receives it.

  1. Create a secret containing only the password and the context the recipient needs.
  2. Choose a short expiration: 1 hour is often enough for an immediate handoff.
  3. Share the complete link and ask the recipient to store the password appropriately.

The link is sensitive too

Anyone with the complete link can reveal the password first. Send it privately, avoid posting it in group channels, and do not assume one-time access verifies the person opening it.

Prefer individual access when possible

Separate accounts and a password manager’s sharing features can be more appropriate for ongoing access. If a password has been exposed or is temporary, change it after the handoff. OneTimeRead limits retrieval of a stored message; it cannot revoke a password.

Create a One-Time Secret

A little less left behind.

Share the sensitive part once. Keep it out of the conversation history.
